Description
This large-scale ceramic anthropomorphic figure is rendered in a Pre-Columbian style, characteristic of Mesoamerican traditions such as those from West Mexico or the Gulf Coast. The object is constructed from terracotta with a burnished red slip and dark pigment highlights. The figure is depicted in a crouching posture, holding a three-pronged manopla or hand-stone in the right hand, a tool traditionally associated with the Mesoamerican ballgame. The figure is adorned with an elaborate tiered headdress containing a central zoomorphic mask, large circular earspools, and a heavy beaded necklace. A wide waistband or belt is visible around the torso. Detailed incised curvilinear and geometric motifs decorate the arms, legs, and chest, representing ritual body paint or tattoos. No maker marks or signatures are present on the piece. Height: 17 inches The item shows an aged appearance with surface wear, pitting, and losses to the slip and pigment throughout. Visible seam lines and surface inconsistencies indicate areas of professional restoration, specifically around the neck and limbs.
