Description
This carved wooden sculpture depicts the Hindu deity Ganesha, rendered in a style characteristic of South Indian Mysore traditions. The figure is seated on a circular pedestal beneath a heavily ornamented canopy or parasol featuring a lotus-motif finial and hanging tassels. Ganesha is depicted with four arms, holding traditional symbolic attributes including an elephant goad (ankusha), a noose (pasha), and his broken tusk, with his trunk curled toward a sweetmeat (modak). The deity is adorned in an elaborate karanda mukuta crown and detailed jewelry. At the base, his vahana (mount), the mouse (mushika), is positioned beside a small vessel of offerings. The sculpture is carved in the round, with the reverse featuring dense, low-relief scrollwork, floral patterns, and geometric borders. An incised symbol resembling a six-pointed star is located on the side of the base, adjacent to faint, illegible Latin script characters. The underside of the base is covered with a black felt pad. Height: 11.5 inches The sculpture is in good overall condition with no significant losses to the intricate carving. The wood exhibits a warm patina and contains minor, natural drying lines consistent with age and material.
