Description
A hand-carved hardwood sculpture depicting the head and neck of a woman. The figure is rendered with a serene expression, closed eyes, and a broad nose. The hairstyle is highly stylized, featuring deep, wavy linear incisions that gather into two distinct tied bundles at the back. The bust rises from an integral, flared circular base that displays visible tool marks from the carving process. The wood has a polished, warm brown finish with natural variations in the grain. The underside of the base contains incised capital letters arranged in three lines. The upper curve reads PETER WISH, the center reads SALTMARSH, and the lower curve reads SAKREBAIA. The style and construction are consistent with mid-20th-century artisanal wood carvings produced in East Africa for the international export market. Base diameter: 8.75 inches Total height: 14 inches
Condition report:
The sculpture is in good vintage condition. The surface shows light wear, minor scuffs, and small abrasions consistent with age and handling. A small natural fissure or hole is present at the crown of the head. The integral base remains structurally stable.
