Description

This lot features a mid-to-late 20th-century machete manufactured by Herramientas Collins S.A. in Guatemala under license from Collins and Co. of Hartford, Connecticut. The tool is constructed with a straight-back steel blade featuring a curved tip and a black molded composite hilt. The hilt is secured to the tang with three metal rivets and features a bird’s head pommel with a lanyard hole. The face of the blade retains a large black and white adhesive label bearing the Legitimus arm and hammer graphic and text including Busquese La Estampa, Collins and Co. Hartford, and Hecho en Guatemala. The machete is housed in a decorative, custom-style brown leather scabbard. The leather is heavily tooled with floral and scrollwork motifs and is embellished with multiple multi-colored suede leather tassels in red, light blue, and tan. A silver-tone metal concho is affixed to the throat of the scabbard, and long leather fringe ties are attached to the tip. The reverse of the scabbard features a stitched leather belt loop. Overall Machete Length: 27 inches Blade Length: 22 inches The blade is in good overall condition, showing original factory grinding marks and a well-preserved adhesive maker’s label. There is visible surface oxidation and light pitting concentrated near the tip of the blade. The composite hilt shows minor surface scuffing but remains secure. The leather scabbard is in very good condition with supple leather and intact stitching. The multi-colored suede tassels show light age-related wear and some accumulated dust.
