Lot 77:
Description
This rectangular wooden box features intricate geometric parquetry and marquetry in a style characteristic of Middle Eastern craftsmanship, specifically from the Syrian or Egyptian regions. The exterior surfaces are covered in a micro-mosaic of wood, bone, and mother-of-pearl. The lid is centered with an elongated hexagonal panel featuring a six-pointed star motif. This central element is framed by a border of diamond-shaped mother-of-pearl tiles and multiple bands of contrasting light and dark wood patterns. The sides of the box display a wide band of repeating interlaced star-and-cross patterns. The interior is composed of unfinished wood. No maker marks or inscriptions are visible on the item. Measurements: Length: 7.5 inches Width: 4.5 inches Height: 2.5 inches. The exterior shows minor wear consistent with age and use. There are small areas of loss to the delicate inlay, primarily along the edges and corner joins. The interior base features a prominent circular dark stain and several smaller scattered marks. The metal piano hinge is a modern replacement. Light surface scratches and dust are present.
