Description
An oval carved shell cameo featuring a relief depiction of a Venetian architectural scene. The foreground shows a gondola on water, while the background includes buildings and a campanile tower. The shell exhibits a light brownish-tan ground with a cream-white carved image. The cameo is secured by four prongs within a silver frame. The frame features a scalloped border accented with multiple pavé-set marcasites. The reverse is fitted with a horizontal pin stem and a safety clasp. A hinged, fold-down bail is attached to the top of the frame, allowing the piece to be worn as a pendant. An indistinct rectangular incised mark is present on the lower portion of the metal frame on the reverse. Width: 1.125 inches Weight: 4.7 grams. The item is in good vintage condition. The shell carving is well-preserved without visible cracks or chips. All marcasites appear to be present. The metal components exhibit surface tarnish and patina consistent with age.
