Description
This lot features two glazed porcelain nativity-themed figurines produced by W. Goebel of West Germany and designed by artist Janet Robson. The first figurine, titled Flight into Egypt, depicts the Virgin Mary seated upon a walking donkey while swaddling the infant Jesus within her blue cloak. The second figurine depicts St. Joseph standing, carrying a lantern and a wooden staff with a bundle over his shoulder. Both pieces are finished in a high-gloss glaze with saturated blue robes and hand-painted facial features. The underside of the Flight into Egypt base is incised with model number Rob 405/A and the date 1959. It features a blue underglaze factory mark consisting of a stylized V containing a bee, accompanied by the text © by W. Goebel W. Germany. The name ROBSON is impressed into the side of the base, and a paper identification label is affixed to the front. The underside of the St. Joseph base is incised with model number Rob 405 B and the date 1961. It bears the same stylized bee factory mark and W. Germany attribution. The St. Joseph figurine has a clean break at the tip of the wooden staff held over the right shoulder; the broken piece is missing. Both figurines exhibit fine, age-related crazing to the glaze on the undersides of the bases. The Flight into Egypt figurine is otherwise in very good condition with no visible chips, cracks, or repairs. The paper labels show minor yellowing and light wear consistent with age.
