Description
This Japanese pottery wall pocket features a tapered, cone-shaped body with a dark, pebble-textured finish. The front is decorated in low relief with an iris and a butterfly, retaining traces of blue, white, and reddish-brown cold-painted or enameled pigments.
Length: approximately 8 inches.
The item displays wear consistent with age and use. There is notable loss of the cold-painted pigments on the iris and butterfly motifs. Surface oxidation and loss of the original dark finish are visible throughout the textured body and on the reverse. The gold-toned finish on the Greek key border shows minor rubbing and wear.
