Lot 247:
Description
This lot features three pieces of stoneware pottery. The collection includes a small cylindrical bottle with a short neck and flared rim, finished in a mottled brown glaze. The base of the bottle is stamped with LOVATT & over LOVATTS, identifying it as a piece from the Langley Mill pottery of Derbyshire, England. The second item is a handled jug with an ovoid body and narrow mouth, featuring a cream-colored salt glaze with a textured orange peel surface and dark iron spotting. A single strap handle is applied to the shoulder. The third item is a large storage jar with a wide mouth and flared rim, finished in a dark brown Albany-type slip glaze.
Large jar height: 7.5 inches
Small bottle height: 4 inches
Salt-glazed jug height: 7.25 inches.
The large brown jar is in good overall condition with minor surface scuffing consistent with age. The small Lovatt and Lovatt bottle shows a chip and area of glaze loss on the shoulder. The cream-colored salt-glazed jug has a vertical hairline crack starting at the shoulder and running down the body, as well as minor surface staining and firing imperfections.
