Description

This lot features two distinct hardcover editions of the children’s classic by Helen Bannerman. The first volume is a large-format edition published by Platt & Munk Publishers, a Division of Questor Education Products Company. The cover and title page state the work was edited by Watty Piper. The copyright page identifies this as a 1972 printing (MCMLXXII). It is bound in pictorial boards and features updated illustrations and character names, specifically Mama Sari and Papa Simbu. The second volume is a smaller-format hardcover titled The Story of Little Black Sambo, published by J. B. Lippincott Company of Philadelphia and New York. This volume is labeled as The Only Authorized American Edition on the cover and title page. It includes its original light blue dust jacket and features color illustrations in the author’s original style, retaining character names such as Black Mumbo. The title page includes ISBN 0-397-30006-9 and ISBN 0-397-30007-7, dating this printing to approximately the 1970s.
Both volumes show light shelf wear and minor toning to the pages consistent with age. The Platt & Munk edition exhibits wear to the pictorial boards, including a small tear at the head of the spine. The Lippincott edition is in good overall condition; the dust jacket shows minor edge wear and light sunning to the spine.
