Description
This 19th-century American salt-glazed stoneware crock is of cylindrical form with a slightly everted rim and two applied lug handles. The exterior features a stylized floral decoration executed in cobalt blue slip. The interior is finished with a dark brown Albany slip glaze. The upper shoulder is impressed with the maker mark N. A. WHITE and SON UTICA, N. Y. To the right of the mark is a stylized numeral 3 embellished with scrollwork, indicating a three-gallon capacity. The underside is unglazed and shows concentric wire marks from production.
Height: 10.5 inches.
The crock is in poor to fair condition with significant structural damage. A large horizontal crack extends across a substantial portion of the mid-body. The interior shows evidence of white adhesive or stabilization material applied along this crack line. The exterior exhibits scattered surface staining, typical kiln marks, and minor chipping to the rim and lug handles.
