This large, vertically oriented Peruvian arpillera textile wall hanging, titled Mercado, depicts a narrative scene of Andean village life and a bustling marketplace. The top portion of the composition features a landscape with mountains under a sun and clouds, accompanied by small dwellings with red roofs and grazing animals including llamas and sheep. The central section transitions through agricultural fields with goats and cacti. The lower half of the textile contains a dense market scene populated by numerous hand-crafted, three-dimensional stuffed fabric figures positioned among stalls of colorful fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Several fabric sacks are embroidered with labels including Maiz and Abono. The piece is constructed using fabric appliqué, embroidery, and stuffed fabric figures on a dark fabric background. The title Mercado is embroidered in red thread at the top right. The initials AQ are embroidered in red at the bottom left corner. A white fabric label is sewn to the reverse which states Arpillera, 70% Poliester – 30% Cotton, Made in Peru.
