Description
This 19th-century steel engraving depicts the ancient Roman architectural ruins of Baalbek in modern-day Lebanon, after a drawing by the British artist William Henry Bartlett. The work displays the characteristic fine, precise line work of a mid-19th-century intaglio steel engraving. Inscriptions are present in the lower margin: “sc. P. Wurster” on the left, attributing the engraving to the German artist Paul Wurster (1807–1874), and “Druck v. A. Schuler i. Stuttg.” on the right, identifying the printer as A. Schuler of Stuttgart.
Frame: 8 x 10 inches.
The print shows light overall toning consistent with age and minor edge discoloration or mat burn visible along the inner perimeter of the matting. The impression remains sharp with strong contrast. There is no evidence of significant foxing, tears, or obvious plate wear. The modern frame and mat are in good condition with minor shelf wear to the wood. Three adhesive hanging strips are attached to the reverse of the frame.
