This antique scientific instrument is a Leeds & Northrup Type S Testing Set, a portable Wheatstone bridge designed for measuring electrical resistance and locating faults in telegraph and telephone lines. The set is housed in a finger-jointed oak carrying case featuring a woven canvas handle and brass hardware. The interior lid contains an original paper instructional label titled Leeds & Northrup Type S Testing Set, which details procedures for the Murray Loop Test, Varley Loop Test, and resistance measurements. The Leeds & Northrup Co., Scientific Instruments, Philadelphia, with serial number 28257. A secondary small plate confirms a patent date of July 28, 1914. An adhesive inventory tag is present on the exterior lid marked INV. # 7085.
