Description
A complete ten-volume set titled The Literature of All Nations and All Ages: History, Character, and Incident, edited by Julian Hawthorne, John Russell Young, and John Porter Lamberton. This Special Edition was published in 1900 by E. R. Du Mont with offices in Chicago, Philadelphia, and St. Louis. The set is bound in three-quarter leather with dark maroon spines and corners over tan buckram cloth boards. The spines feature five raised bands with gilt-stamped lettering and decorative horizontal bands. Internal content includes one hundred demi-teinte plates and numerous portraits of prominent authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain, and Robert Louis Stevenson. A printed facsimile signature of lead editor Julian Hawthorne is located on a tipped-in page in Volume I. Volume X contains a tipped-in orange instructional slip from Modern Bookbinding titled NOTICE. HOW TO OPEN A BOOK. The copyright is held by Art Library Publishing Co. (1899) and E. R. Du Mont (1900).
Each volume measures approximately 9.25 by 6.5 inches.
The set exhibits moderate to heavy shelf wear consistent with age. Rubbing and scuffing are visible on the leather corners and spine edges of all volumes. There is significant chipping and loss of leather at the head and tail of several spines, particularly on Volume I and Volume X. The interior pages show moderate toning and occasional light foxing. The cloth boards show minor soiling and edge wear. The bindings remain generally sound.
