Lot 421:
Description
This mid-20th-century landscape painting is attributed to Italian artist Giuseppe Arigliano (1917-1999) based on stylistic and compositional parallels to documented works by the artist depicting Paraggi, near Portofino. The scene, likely executed in oil on canvas, features a prominent pink villa nestled among lush, blue-toned trees atop a rocky coastal cliff. The foreground shows a deep blue sea populated by several white sailboats, while hazy mountains recede into the distance under a vast, pale sky. The work is characterized by impressionistic brushwork and heavy impasto highlights, particularly on the building and water surfaces. The painting is housed in a decorative gilded wood or composite frame featuring carved foliate patterns and a neutral linen liner. The reverse is finished with a brown paper dust cover. No signature found.
Measures: 33 inches x 27 inches tall
The painting exhibits a horizontal surface scratch or abrasion in the upper sky area and a small dark spot or inclusion on the distant mountain. The gilded frame shows minor surface wear, small chips, and losses to the finish, primarily at the corners. The linen liner has light toning. The paper dust cover on the verso is brittle and torn.
