Description
This lot features a trio of vintage Japanese wall calendars, including two paper-based examples and one decorative textile hanging.
The first calendar, dated 1991 (Heisei 3), was published by Asahi Shimbun-sha and features the artwork of Harada Taiji. The set includes six colorful naive-style paintings of rural Japanese landscapes. The artwork is credited in the lower right margin.
The second calendar, dated 1992 (Heisei 4), is printed on specialty sugikawashi, a traditional Japanese cedar bark paper. The upper register features an illustration of a monkey in traditional Sarugaku performance attire, wearing a red cape and an eboshi hat. The background is composed of fibrous washi with gold-flecked accents. The gold-stamped characters for Sarugaku (猿楽) appear in the upper left. A small artist’s seal is present in the lower right of the monkey illustration.
The third item is a 2004 Year of the Monkey zodiac calendar produced as a printed fabric hanging. The indigo-dyed textile is mounted on dowels at the top and bottom. The central graphic features a stylized monkey surrounded by a fan-shaped arrangement of auspicious symbols, including Maneki Neko (beckoning cats), Daruma dolls, and floral motifs. The zodiac character for monkey (申) is featured on a lantern icon. This calendar measures 19 inches wide and 35 inches long.
The items are in overall good to excellent condition. The paper-based calendars show light signs of age, including minor edge curling and toning. The 1991 calendar has small pinholes in the corners from previous display. The 1992 cedar bark paper calendar remains well-preserved with no significant wear. The 2004 fabric hanging is in excellent condition with vibrant colors and no visible staining or fraying.
