Description
This unframed oil painting on an oval hardboard panel depicts a portrait of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The subject is rendered in a traditional realistic style, wearing a grey double-breasted military tunic with three rows of gold-tone buttons, gold collar insignia, and a tasseled gold sash. He holds a hat in his right hand and rests his left hand near a saber, with the head of a horse visible in the background to the right. The brushwork is moderately loose in the background and more defined in the details of the uniform. In the lower right corner, the work is signed in blue paint A. M. Stephens. The verso of the panel features a textured waffle pattern characteristic of hardboard.
