Description
A pair of circular porcelain collector plates from the Songbirds of America series, featuring the artwork of American wildlife artist John A. Ruthven. This set, produced in 1972 and identified as the First Pair of a Series, was manufactured by Hutschenreuther in Germany for Wallace China. The decoration consists of high-quality transfer-printed scenes based on Ruthven’s original paintings. One plate depicts a pair of Eastern Bluebirds (Sialia sialis) perched on leafy branches, while the second plate features American Goldfinches (Spinus tristis) among flowering thistles. The reverse of each plate is marked with a gold backstamp containing the species name, artist attribution, and the Hutschenreuther factory mark consisting of a lion over the date 1814. Both pieces are part of a limited edition of 5,000 and are hand-stamped with the serial number 3780. Each plate retains a green and silver foil retailer sticker for Wallace China. The lot includes the original series title card and a Certificate of Registration.
Dimensions: 10.25 inches in diameter.
Both plates are in excellent condition with no visible chips, cracks, or repairs. The gold gilding on the rims is well-preserved with no significant wear. The accompanying documentation is present and in good condition.
