Lot 80:
Description
This original work on paper by American artist Arthur B. Davies depicts a kneeling female figure rendered in a lyrical, symbolic style. Executed in pastel and chalk on gray-toned paper, the composition features a figure with long dark hair, highlighted with white and yellow tones in her draped garment. The work is signed in the lower right: A. B. DAVIES. Below the signature is an inscription in a finer hand: per V. M. D., which indicates authentication by the artist’s widow, Virginia Meriwether Davies. The verso retains a gallery label from Reese Palley, Atlantic City, NJ, which identifies the artist, title as Kneeling Figure, and medium as pastel. The backing paper displays several handwritten inventory and auction notations, including X49, 129, and #AG R 1011.
Overall frame: 22.5 x 17.5 inches
Sight size: 14 x 10 inches
The artwork appears to be in good overall condition with minor toning to the paper consistent with age. No evidence of foxing, tears, or significant fading is visible. The gilded frame shows surface wear, including small chips and losses to the finish at the corners and edges. The fabric mat shows light surface soiling and age-related discoloration.
