Description
This is a group of three nishiki-e (multi-colored) woodblock prints featuring celebrated designs by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858). These examples are high-quality 20th-century editions produced from recut woodblocks on washi paper. The collection includes two designs from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (Meisho Edo Hyakkei) and one from Famous Places of the Eastern Capital (Toto Meisho).
The first print, Asakusa Kinryuzan (Kinryuzan Temple at Asakusa), depicts the Kaminarimon gate of Senso-ji temple in a heavy snowfall, framed by a large red temple lantern in the foreground and a green pillar to the left. It includes the red series title cartouche, the green title cartouche, and the signature Hiroshige ga. Marginal marks include the publisher seal for Shitaya Uoya Eikichi and circular aratame censor/date seals.
The second print, Ueno Sannai Tsuki no Matsu (The Moon Pine at Ueno Sannai), illustrates a famously gnarled pine tree with a circular branch framing a view of Shinobazu Pond and the Bentendo shrine. It features the series title cartouche, specific view cartouche, and signature Hiroshige ga. The lower right margin contains the publisher seal for Uoya Eikichi and marginal censor/date seals.
The third print is a horizontal composition titled Edo Ryogokubashi Noryo no Yakei (Enjoying the Evening Cool at Ryogoku Bridge in Edo). It shows pleasure boats gathered under the wooden bridge at twilight with a red sunburst effect in the sky. An inscription in the upper left identifies the location and the artist signature Hiroshige ga.
Each sheet: 14.75 x 10 inches.
The prints are in overall excellent condition with bright, vibrant pigments and well-preserved bokashi (color gradation) in the skies and water. The paper is clean with full margins and exhibits no visible foxing, toning, creasing, or structural damage.
