Description

An Indo-Persian style steel helmet, commonly referred to as a kulah khud, featuring a hemispherical dome. The exterior of the bowl is extensively decorated with gold-toned metal overlay applied in a koftgari technique, displaying intricate foliate and floral scrolling motifs. The helmet is surmounted by a faceted central spike on a circular base. Two tubular plume holders are mounted to the front for the insertion of decorative feathers. A sliding steel nasal guard with lobed decorative finials is positioned at the front, secured by a threaded locking screw. The lower rim is fitted with a chainmail aventail composed of linked steel rings for neck protection. The interior contains a padded textile lining with a red, yellow, and black circular Bandhani tie-dye pattern, suggesting a Northern Indian provenance. Stand not included.

Height: 8.5 inches
Interior Diameter: 8 inches.

The helmet shows signs of age consistent with a 19th-century piece. There is surface oxidation and a dark patina on the steel components. The gold-toned metal overlay exhibits minor rubbing and areas of loss. The chainmail is mostly intact, though minor link losses and loose rings are visible. The interior Bandhani textile shows fading and general wear from use but remains substantially complete.
