Description
This sculptural wall plaque depicts a stylized Madonna and Child in an elongated, curved form. The figure is rendered with attenuated proportions and rhythmic, vertical pleating of the robes, characteristic of mid-20th-century devotional aesthetics. The piece is constructed from a molded composite material, such as chalkware, and features a distressed polychrome and gilded finish. The Virgin Mary is depicted with a tilted head and downcast eyes, cradling the infant Christ. The reverse of the plaque is flat and unfinished, revealing a light-colored interior material where the surface is chipped, and it includes a small metal screw-eye for hanging. There is extensive flaking and loss to the polychrome and gilt finish across the front and sides, revealing the base material beneath. Several small chips are visible on the edges and high-relief areas. The reverse shows widespread crazing and crackling of the decorative layer.
