Description
This lot consists of two Catholic devotional objects. The primary piece is a miniature Italian triptych altarpiece made of painted and gilded wood. The central arched panel depicts Saint Francis of Assisi with a halo, preaching to a bird in flight within a landscape, accompanied by another monk. The side wings and the tiered base are decorated with Florentine-style scrollwork and fleur-de-lis motifs in gold on blue and red grounds. The reverse of the base is incised with the mark MADE IN ITALY. The second item is a miniature oval relief plaque depicting the Apparition of Our Lady of Lourdes. The scene features the Virgin Mary standing in a grotto with a blue-tinted sash and hands in prayer, with Saint Bernadette Soubirous kneeling before her. The relief is cast in a white material, possibly plaster or wax, and is housed under a domed glass lens within a brass-toned metal frame. The bottom of the relief is inscribed with the words Lourdes and Apparition. These items feature Christian devotional iconography; no Jewish iconography or themes are present.

The triptych shows minor wear to the gilding and painted surfaces, particularly at the edges and hinges. There is a small white mark on the interior right hinge area. The reverse shows typical wood grain and surface scuffing. The metal frame of the Lourdes plaque is damaged, showing significant denting and a visible split in the side. There is some interior dust and debris present under the glass.
