Description

This group consists of three framed religious prints featuring motifs from the Italian Renaissance. The largest work is a color print of an angel playing a tambourine, after a fresco by Fra Angelico. The print is set in a dark wood frame with a gold-tone mat. A verso label from publisher L. Pistone in Florence, Italy, identifies the artist as Beato Angelico and the source as the San Marco Museum. The second item is a rectangular print of a trumpeting angel in a green robe, housed in a gold-painted architectural frame with a pediment top and molded base. The third piece is a monochrome circular tondo print after Raphael’s Madonna della Seggiola, depicting the Virgin and Child with St. John the Baptist, set in a gold-finished frame. The circular piece features a handwritten inscription on the verso identifying it as an 1896 wedding gift for Alice Merriam and Clay Herrick of East Cleveland, Ohio.

Largest frame: 16.5 x 12.25 inches
Rectangular frame: 8.25 x 4.75 inches
Circular frame: 5 inches diameter.

The frames show visible wear consistent with age. The gold-painted architectural frame displays significant chipping, gesso loss, and cracking, particularly on the pediment and base. The circular gold frame has multiple cracks and areas of surface loss. The paper backing of the largest print has a large water stain across the bottom edge, though the print surface remains clean. The paper backing of the tondo is partially detached at the top.
