Description
An antique Victorian-era optical entertainment set comprising a pedestal-mounted stereoscope and an extensive archive of approximately 200 stereographic cards. The stereoscope is constructed of turned wood with a weighted circular base and features a tilting mechanism to adjust viewing angles. It includes a sliding card holder mounted on a wooden rail and a viewing hood with dual magnifying lenses. The card collection is housed in three organizational boxes with handwritten subject dividers and a two-volume slipcase set titled Stereographic Library: Italy published by the Keystone View Company. The archive includes images from various publishers including Keystone View Company, Underwood and Underwood, B.W. Kilburn, H.C. White Company, and Dodge, Collier and Perkins. Subject categories represented include geographic scenes of Italy, Japan, and United States cities; transportation themes including railroads and maritime vessels; social scenes of children, babies, and humor; and educational cards depicting three-dimensional wireframe diagrams and natural history specimens such as coral.

The stereoscope wooden frame and base are structurally sound with a dark patina and minor surface marks. The viewing hood shows significant age-related deterioration, including cracking, peeling, and surface loss to the dark exterior covering but is still functional. The lenses appear intact. The stereoview cards are in generally good vintage condition with minor corner bumping, light foxing, and occasional slight bowing typical for cardboard mounts of this era. The book-shaped slipcase boxes for the Italy collection exhibit heavy wear to the spines and edges with significant surface material loss and fraying.
