Lot 449:
Description
A pair of fireplace andirons in the Federal or Neoclassical style. Each andiron features a decorative cast brass front assembly with an upright column composed of a faceted, octagonal urn-form section, surmounted by a turned neck and an acorn-shaped finial. The brass standards are supported by arched cabriole-style front legs terminating in ball feet, and a central brass support leg. The rear log supports, or billets, are made of cast iron and terminate in a downward-pointing rear foot. An upright brass guard finial is mounted at the junction where the brass front meets the iron billet. The brass components are secured via an internal threaded iron rod and nut assembly visible on the underside. No maker marks, signatures, or hallmarks are present.
Height: 25 inches
Depth: 18 inches
Width: 9.5 inches.
Condition report:
Both andirons are in good, stable condition, showing wear consistent with age and fireplace use. The brass surfaces exhibit a naturally matured, unpolished patina with areas of tarnish, darkening, and minor surface scuffs. One of the upper finials shows a visible hairline stress crack at its lower collar. The cast iron billets show heavy surface oxidation, rust, and charring from exposure to heat and fire, though they remain structurally sound.
