Lot 462:
Description
A large estate collection of sports trading cards and related promotional ephemera, primarily focused on Major League Baseball with significant National Football League and National Basketball Association content. The collection is housed in a five-row cardboard storage box containing thousands of individual cards spanning from the mid-1950s through the early 1990s. The lot includes a wide variety of manufacturers including Topps, Donruss, Fleer, Upper Deck, and Sportflics.
Notable vintage items include three 1950s-era promotional baseball cards from the Kahn’s Wieners “The Wiener The World Awaited” series featuring Dale Long (Pittsburgh Pirates), Hal Jeffcoat (Cincinnati Reds), and George Crowe (Cincinnati Reds). The 1970s era is represented by various Topps Baseball issues including 1973 cards (Cookie Rojas, Mike Ryan, John Ellis, Jose Pagan) and 1979 cards (Omar Moreno, Bill Bonham, Bill Atkinson).
Football content features a 1986 Topps Jerry Rice card and a group of 1987 Topps Football cards including the checklist (#1-132), Lionel Manuel, and Gerry Ellis. Basketball content includes 1989-90 NBA Hoops cards, notably featuring Mark Jackson.
Modern era baseball cards from the late 1980s and early 1990s comprise the bulk of the collection, with identified cards including 1981 Topps (Tom Brookens, Jay Johnstone), 1988 Topps Andre Dawson, 1988 Donruss Gerald Perry, 1989 Upper Deck, and a 1991 Post Cereal Rickey Henderson. Specialty items include a set of 1986 Sportflics lenticular “magic motion” cards and late 1980s Bouillabaseball parody cards featuring character art such as “Brain Rot Bruce.” The bulk of the cards are organized within the storage box using handwritten dividers for specific years and brands, including Topps ’73 and ’87, Donruss ’89 and ’91, Fleer ’88 and ’90, and Upper Deck ’90.
The collection is in ungraded, raw condition. Condition varies significantly across the lot. Loose cards outside the storage box show a range from Fair to Excellent. Vintage Kahn’s Wieners cards exhibit significant surface aging, tanning, and corner wear. Several bundles of cards are secured with rubber bands, which has resulted in visible bowing and potential edge damage to the cards at the top and bottom of the stacks. Cards housed within the storage rows appear generally better preserved, ranging from Good to Near Mint. Typical signs of handling include corner softening, surface scratches, and edge whitening.
