Lot 92:
Description
This lot consists of two framed artworks. The first is a hand-colored etching on paper by C. Gaymard, depicting a view of Piazza San Marco in Venice. The composition features St. Mark’s Basilica and the Campanile with figures and pigeons in the foreground. It is signed in pencil at the lower right “C. Gaymard”. The verso includes a gallery label from “John R. Thompson, 64 King Street E., Hamilton” and handwritten pencil inscriptions stating “Genuine Etching,” “Artists original proof,” and “Etched by C. Gaymard.” The second item is a Persian-style miniature painting, executed in gouache or watercolor on a thin bone or ivory-style panel. The scene depicts four horsemen in traditional attire engaged in a hunt for gazelles within a landscape. The central image is surrounded by a painted blue and white floral border and is housed in a khatam marquetry frame featuring complex geometric star patterns.
Etching (framed): 12.25 x 9.5 inches
Miniature (framed): 5.5 x 7 inches.
The etching shows visible foxing and brown spotting across the cream mat board. The Persian miniature painting itself appears in good condition, however, the khatam marquetry frame has a significant loss of inlay material along the left vertical edge and minor nicks to the wood corners.
