Description
This pair of late 19th-century photogravures, printed by the renowned firm Goupil and Cie of Paris, showcases classic examples of French Orientalist imagery.
The first print, formatted horizontally, is after a painting by Jean-Leon Gerome (French, 1824–1904) titled Recreation in a Camp. The plate is inscribed J. L. GEROME on the left side of the stone hearth.
The second print is after a work by Eugene Fromentin (French, 1820–1876) depicting an Algerian falconry party. The print is inscribed in the plate along the lower margin with EUGENE FROMENTIN, PINX. on the left and GRAVURE, GOUPIL ET CIE on the right.
Both works are executed in the photogravure technique, a photomechanical intaglio process pioneered by Goupil and Cie that captures the tonal richness, subtle gradations, and deep velvety blacks of the original paintings. Plate marks are obscured by the window mats. The prints are housed under cream-colored mats in matching modern stained wood frames. The backing boards are fitted with modern metal hangers and retail labels indicating the frames are 11 by 14 inches, manufactured for Hobby Lobby and dated 2013.

The photogravures appear to be in excellent condition within their frames. The impressions are strong and clear with deep, rich contrast. There are no visible signs of foxing, toning, moisture damage, tears, or paper losses in the exposed image areas. The modern stained wood frames and mats are in excellent condition with only minor shelf wear. The prints have not been examined out of their frames.
