Description

This is a vintage (1960’s) hand-knotted Chinese Peking style area rug crafted with a wool pile on a cotton foundation. The design features a classic Art Deco aesthetic with an open cream-colored field. At the center is a circular medallion containing a stylized navy blue Shou character, representing longevity, enclosed within a ring of fretwork and floral sprays. Four matching corner spandrels mirror this motif with L-shaped fretwork intertwined with floral patterns in navy and medium blue. The rug is framed by a wide border system, including an inner light blue bead-and-reel guard border, a main border featuring repeating floral sprays and Shou characters, and a solid navy blue outer border with a linear fretwork guard. The back of the rug reveals a moderately coarse hand-knotted weave consistent with mid-century Chinese production. Both ends are finished with short, white cotton fringe.

Measures: 5 feet x 8 feet x 0.5 inch pile

The rug is in generally good condition with a thick, plush pile. A small dark surface spot is visible in the cream field area. The fringe is intact but exhibits some minor tangling and irregularity consistent with use. The selvedges are stable and the colors remain vibrant. No significant areas of wear or moth damage are apparent.
