Description
This is a large nineteenth-century hand-colored mezzotint engraving titled Flora, after a painting by Valentine Walter Bromley (British, 1848–1877) and engraved by Thomas Lewis Atkinson (British, 1817–1898). The work utilizes the mezzotint technique to achieve soft tonal gradations and is finished with hand-applied color.
The lower margin bears several printed inscriptions: PAINTED BY V.W. BROMLEY. on the lower left and ENGRAVED BY T.L. ATKINSON. on the lower right. The central publication line states: London Published Jany 1st 1877. by Thomas McLean 7 Haymarket. The print is presented in a dark-stained wood frame under glass with a cream mat.
Frame: 39 x 26.5 inches.
The print is in good decorative condition with overall light paper toning and minor foxing consistent with age. The hand-coloring remains vibrant. The frame shows minor scuffs and surface wear. The paper backing on the reverse of the frame exhibits significant moisture staining and water damage, though this does not appear to have affected the print or matting on the front.
