Description

This 19th-century line engraving on paper, titled ENEE, is based on a painting by Jacques-Louis David. The print is inscribed in the lower margin with Peint par J.L. David on the left and Gravé par Godby on the right, identifying James Godby as the engraver. On the reverse, the frame retains an original retailer label for Carlos Braun of 32 Rue Grignan, Marseille, an agent for the Parisian publishers Braun and Cie, specializing in engravings, etchings, and luxury artistic framing. The work is housed in a period gilded wood frame.

Frame: 27 inches x 21.5 inches.

The engraving shows moderate overall toning and scattered light foxing throughout the sheet and margins. The impression remains clear and strong. The period gilded frame exhibits surface wear, fine cracking to the gesso, and visible losses to the gilding, particularly at the corners. The paper backing on the reverse is worn and partially detached along the edges.
