Description
This collection of unframed nineteenth-century prints and bookplates features a diverse range of subject matter including historical portraits, landscapes, and Victorian genre scenes. The group utilizes various printing techniques including steel engraving, wood engraving, and photogravure. Notable attributions and titles printed in the lower margins include works after Thomas Gainsborough (Mrs. Henry Fane 1782, Mrs. Sheridan, Countess of Sussex and Lady Barbara Yelverton), Frank Bramley (For of such is the Kingdom of Heaven), Ludwig Knaus (Behind the Scenes), E.M. Ward (The last toilet of Charlotte Corday), and Hubert Herkomer (Chelsea pensioners in church). Portrait subjects depicted include General Sir Charles Napier, composer Giacomo Meyerbeer, and Sir John Franklin. Landscape views feature a scene of Tintern Abbey. Several of the portrait and landscape sheets display distinct plate marks indicating intaglio processes, while many of the larger genre scenes are relief-printed wood engravings typical of nineteenth-century illustrated periodicals. The impressions vary in quality, with several fine-lined steel engravings showing precise detail alongside tonal photogravures and commercial relief prints.
Sheet sizes range from approximately 8 x 10 inches to 11 x 15 inches.
The collection is in mixed condition. Most sheets exhibit moderate to heavy foxing and overall toning consistent with age. Several examples show significant water staining, edge wear, ragged margins, and corner creases. Some prints have small tears along the edges and adhesive residue on the reverse from previous mounting.
