Description

This collection consists of antique black and white prints produced through steel engraving, photogravure, and lithography. The subject matter reflects 19th-century artistic tastes, including European landscapes, historical tableaux, mythological scenes, and genre paintings. Visible titles and artist attributions include Oedipus after Jean-Leon Gerome, The Pope and the Inquisitor after Jean-Paul Laurens, The Maid of Orleans after E.M. Ward, and The Young Falconer after F. Taylor. Architectural and landscape views include Venice – San Giorgio, Windsor Castle, Antwerp Cathedral, Dinant, and The Jetty, Trouville. Narrative works include The Death of Nelson, Helen Kottanner Abducts the Hungarian Crown, and Apollo Killing the Python. Genre scenes such as Coco’s Last Ration and The Sign Painter are also present. These items appear to be removed plates or supplements from Victorian-era art publications or portfolios.
Dimensions: individual sheets range from approximately 8 x 10 inches to 11 x 14 inches.
The collection is in fair to good condition. Significant foxing and small brown age spots are present on several prints, primarily in the margins. Toning and yellowing are visible along the paper edges. Multiple sheets show evidence of being removed from bound volumes, featuring rough or frayed left edges. Occasional light creasing and minor corner wear are present across the assortment.
