Description

This lot features two early 20th-century items: a large-format pictorial book and a student photo album. The primary volume is titled The Land of Living Color: A Pictorial Journey From The Storied Southwest Through The Gardens and Canyons of the Golden State. Published by the Pacific Novelty Company in 1915, the work is copyrighted by J. B. Scofield. The book is a softcover quarto bound in heavy brown cardstock, featuring an embossed Art Nouveau design of golden poppies on the front cover. Internally, the volume contains numerous tipped-in or printed color photographic plates depicting scenic views of California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Juarez, Mexico. The plates include landscapes such as Gardens of Gold and A Pergola in Pasadena. Photographers and companies credited include H. C. Tibbitts, Fred Harvey, Robinson and Crandall, Miller Photo Company, Weister Company, Benjamin F. Gifford, Curtis and Miller, Webster and Stevens, and Valentine, with color interpretations by W. H. Bull.

Accompanying the book is a small, cord-tied photo album bound in brown suede leather. The front cover is gold-embossed with the initials S. L. H. S., likely representing a high school. The album contains several sepia-toned studio portrait photographs of young men and women from the early 1900s.

Book: 11.5 inches by 8.5 inches
Album: 6.5 inches by 7 inches.

The book exhibits typical age-related wear, including edge wear, minor creasing, and light scuffing to the heavy cardstock covers. The interior plates remain vibrant and the binding is secure. The suede photo album shows significant surface wear, scuffing, and scratches to the leather. Internally, one portrait of a young man has a large, prominent purple stain across the center of the image. The leather tie is present but shows signs of wear.
