Description
A relief-molded glazed stoneware beer stein with a hunting motif, resembling the work of Simon Peter Gerz. The tapered cylindrical body features high-relief scenes of forest wildlife set against a deep cobalt blue glazed ground. One primary scene depicts a baying stag with large antlers, accompanied by a doe and fawn, with a hunter positioned in a raised forest stand in the distance. Another scene illustrates a group of wild boars in a forest clearing. Polychrome hand-painted accents are used to detail the animals and landscape. A banner at the base of the central scene reads Waidmanns heil, a traditional German hunting greeting. The stein is fitted with a large figural handle realistically modeled as a fox and is topped with an ornate, domed pewter lid featuring embossed scrollwork and a decorative foliate thumb lift. The base is impressed with several marks: germany in an arc, mold number 30, and Made in Germany. A faint circular impressed mark is present but illegible.
Height: 11.5 inches.
The item is in good condition. crazing is visible in the glaze, particularly on the interior and the base. The pewter lid displays a natural aged patina. No chips, cracks, or repairs are noted.
